UF Historic St. Augustine

Historic Building Preservation

UF Historic St. Augustine cares for 23 historic properties and 38 buildings throughout the city, preserving Florida’s oldest urban landscape for future generations. Each property, ranging from colonial-era structures to reconstructed and interpretive buildings, is maintained and interpreted to support both public education and scholarly research. Through careful stewardship, UFHSA brings history to life while protecting the architectural and cultural heritage that makes St. Augustine unique.

Governor's House Cultural Center and Museum Preservation

The Governor’s House Cultural Center and Museum is located in the heart of historic downtown St. Augustine at the intersection of King Street and St. George Street, overlooking the historic Plaza de la Constitución. Historically known as Government House, the site has been home to several government offices since 1598, giving it a long and fascinating history. An exhibit in the grand lobby traces this story, including a timeline to the present day.

Supported, in part, by grants from the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources and the State of Florida, the building underwent extensive renovations over five years, totaling approximately $6 million, to stabilize and restore its its historic structure while making it fully accessible. Today, the Governor’s House serves as a vibrant museum and cultural center, preserving St. Augustine’s heritage and welcoming visitors to explore its colonial past.
