UF Historic St. Augustine

About University of Florida Historic
St. Augustine (UFHSA)

Our mission is simple: To preserve, interpret, and educate the public on the state-owned historic resources in St. Augustine, while supporting educational programs for professionals in related fields. The Florida Legislature entrusted this mission to the University of Florida in 2007. The successful outcome is a deep understanding of Florida’s early American heritage through academic research, living history, and cultural tourism.

In 2007, Chapter 267.1735 F.S. authorized the University of Florida to assume management of certain historic properties in St. Augustine. This legislation ensured the long-term preservation and interpretation of state-owned sites while supporting educational programs that prepare professionals in historic preservation, archaeology, cultural resource management, museum administration, and related fields.

Building on this mandate, UF developed a Strategic Plan in 2009 to guide property use, visitor experience, interpretive exhibits, and educational programming. The plan emphasized collaboration with the City of St. Augustine and other stakeholders to balance preservation, public access, and meaningful learning opportunities for students and visitors alike.

In 2010, the State of Florida provided recurring Plant Operation and Maintenance (PO&M) funding, enabling UF to officially take responsibility for these historic sites. Later that year, UF Historic St. Augustine, Inc. was established as a Direct Support Organization to oversee and enhance preservation, interpretation, and public engagement, ensuring that these irreplaceable sites remain vibrant, educational, and accessible for generations to come.
